Betty Fayerene Horne, age 88, of Norman, died Monday, May 12, 2014, at Arkansas Hospice in Hot Springs. She was born on June 5, 1925, near Norman, to Cleveland Lafayette and Emma Clay McGough Horne. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Sam Horne and Harvey Horne; and two sisters, Esther Horne Black and Ruth Horne. She graduated from Norman High School in 1943, moved to Washington at age 17, and later worked at a plant making plywood during World War II. She worked on hemlock used to build Howard Hughes' "Spruce Goose" experimental wooden airplane, the largest airplane ever to fly. She graduated from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville with a Bachelor of Art in 1948 and a Master of Education in 1957. She taught in public schools in Arkansas and Missouri for 38 years and supervised photography, layout, and production for numerous high school annuals. Betty was a prolific and accomplished artist in water color and oil throughout her life. After retirement in 1986, she built an art studio and gave private lessons. Several post-retirement paintings were commissions from individuals in several states. Her painting "Winter Sky on Gurdon Street" is on display in Public School Retirement System of Missouri. Betty served as Elder at Barr Memorial Presbyterian Church and was Clerk of Session for six years. She was a leader at Vacation Bible Schools for decades and taught Sunday School classes for adults and youth. Service to civic organizations included Montgomery County Nursing Home Board, Montgomery County Library Board, President of the Tri-Lakes Library Board and President of the Caddo Hills School Board. She enjoyed traveling, reading, drives on rural roads, and long walks with family and friends. Betty is survived by her sister-in-law, Irene Mason Horne of Littleton, Colorado; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, May 31, 2014, in the Barr-Memorial Presbyterian Church in Norman with Commissioned Ruling Elder Hartley Jones and Commissioned Ruling Elder Carolyn Beane officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Esther Horne Black Permanent Education Fund, BMPC, P.O.
