Birdene Plyler

June 25, 1927 — October 11, 2014

Birdene Plyler, age 87, of Murfreesboro, passed away Saturday, October 11, 2014. She was born on June 25, 1927, in Kirby, the daughter of Ocie Babbitt and Beedie Turner Babbitt. On May 8, 1947 she was married to Jonas W. Plyler, Sr. who preceded her in death on September 18, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her son-in-law, Larry Smedley; three brothers, Clara Babbitt, Delbert Babbitt and Finis Babbitt; and one sister, Bernice DeNatle. She was a faithful member of the Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Murfreesboro for over fifty-seven years. She is fondly remembered by her family as their "little red hen", always working so hard with her hands making clothes, cooking her wonderful meals and just being a good provider to them all. She enjoyed gardening, working in her beautiful flower beds, taking care of her beloved cats and her best friend for over eight years, her cherished dog, Goldie. Her family and neighbors enjoyed her beautiful voice as she would sing like a bird while her windows were open or she was hanging out her clothes. Birdene was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who dearly loved each and every member of her family and will be deeply missed by all, and her memory will live on in each of their hearts forever. She is survived by one son, Jonas Plyler, Jr. and his wife, Cheryl of Murfreesboro; two daughters, Glenda Smedley of Ashdown and Retha Ward and her husband, Floyd "Doc" of Murfreesboro; nine grandchildren and their spouses, J. W. Plyler, III, Keith Plyler, Daniel and Catherine Plyler, Adam Plyler, Nita and Greg Thurman, David and Britany Smedley, Alan Smedley, Joshua Ward, and Dustin and Mary Ward; nine great-grandchildren, Courtney Plyler, Nathan Plyler, Belle Plyler, Colton Plyler, Abigail Plyler, Addison Smedley, Kinley Smedley, Kailey Thurman and Seth Thurman; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of wonderful friends. Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, October 14, 2014, in the Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Murfreesboro with Bro. Glen Green and Bro. Wayne Johnson officiating. Visitation will be held Monday evening, 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, in the Temple Missionary Baptist Church, Murfreesboro. Interment will be in the New Ozan Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Guest registry is at www.davis-smith.com.
