Burl Cowart, age 78, of Glenwood, died Wednesday, June 6, 2012. He was born on May 16, 1934, at Lodi, the son James Levi Cowart and Allie Mae Welch Cowart. On August 4, 1955, he was married to Viola Shelton. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Keith Cowart; an infant grandson; and his brother, Leon Cowart. He was a member of the Pilgrims Rest Landmark Missionary Baptist Church and a farmer. Burl was an avid sports fan and enjoyed following the Kirby Trojans. He also enjoyed raising and running his hunting dogs. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and adored spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Viola Cowart of Lodi; three sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Tammy Cowart, Mark Cowart and Jody and Paige Cowart, all of Lodi; two daughters, Freda Cowart of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Kristie Womble of Hot Springs; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Brian and Stacy Cowart, Shawn and Brooke Cowart, Mandee and Jerry Strickland, Lexi Cowart, C. J. Cowart, Remi Cowart, Arli Cowart, Greer Cowart and Katlin Womble; five great-grandchildren, Colton Cowart, Emily Cowart, Micah Claire Cowart, Kinley Cowart and Madelyn Strickland; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Frazier and Velma Cowart, Clidus and Faye Cowart and Ed and Frances Cowart, all of Lodi; four sisters, Mildred Raybon of Pearcy, Linnie Mae Wacaster and Margie Dean, both of Hot Springs and Syble Thomas of Lodi; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, June 9, 2012, in the Pilgrims Rest Landmark Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. Bobby Golden and Bro. Donny Davis officiating. Visitation will be Friday, 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, also at the church. Interment will be in the Lodi Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood. Pallbearers will be Mike Haggard, Johnny Bratton, Mike Putz, Scott Cowart, Kyle Cowart, Brian Cowart, Shawn Cowart and Jerry Strickland. Honorary pallbearers will be the doctors, nurses and staff of National Park Medical Center and Odyssey Hospice.
