Charles Ray Thornton

Charles Ray Thornton, age 74, of Athens, passed away at his home on Friday, March 16, 2018. He was born on March 17, 1943, in Athens, the son of Delbert C. Thornton and Effie B. Golden Thornton. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Loraine Thornton, Ida Waggoner, Floy Conatser and Bobbie Smallwood; and two brothers, Woodrow Thornton and Boyd Thornton. He was a U.S. Army veteran; worked for many years driving a shavings truck; and was a logger; and a contractor for the U.S. Forestry Service. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and farming; but his greatest joy in life was working in his garden, growing his delicious vegetables that he loved to share with his family and friends. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, J. B. and Janie Thornton of Indiana; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Bonnie and Al Slagel of Huntington, Indiana and Joyce and Doyle Horn of Newhope; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members; and a host of wonderful friends. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood. Guest registry is at www.davis-smith.com.
