Doris Carter Singleton

July 29, 1950 — March 29, 2019

Doris Janelle Carter Singleton, age 68, of DeQueen, left this earth to go and be Sheltered in the Arms of God on Friday, March 29, 2019. She was the only daughter of Marion Woodrow Carter and Bertha Lois Sparks Carter who have preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Floyd Carter and Harold Carter; and her very, favorite aunt, Flossie Sparks Rogers Hill. Mrs. Singleton enjoyed many hobbies, such as, floral arranging, decorating, reading and singing gospel music and ladies choir at her church. She also enjoyed spending time with her friends going to flea markets, especially her life-long, best friend, Reva Cogburn Turner. She was a people person and enjoyed a good laugh. Mrs. Singleton belonged to many organizations, such as the Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary and her much beloved Emblem organization where she held many offices, her best love was being Americanism Chairperson. Being a WWII POW/MIAs daughter, she never forgot our veterans. For many, many years, she planned and hosted the Memorial Day and Veterans Day services on the Mena Courthouse to honor our veterans. One of the things Mrs. Singleton enjoyed most in her life was her job as a substitute teacher. She subbed for all grades, kindergarten through junior high school. In every grade level, she enjoyed the hugs from her students daily and took her job seriously. She truly wanted to make a difference in her students lives. Mrs. Singleton was an animal lover and could not stand to see an animal abused. She rescued several dogs that had been abused, cared and loved them, and considered them her babies. The greatest loves of her life were her only daughter, Misty Gayle Thornton; her two precious grandchildren, Alivia McKenzie Brown and Kaden Bailey Stivers; and her great-grandson, Kannon Lee Brown. She was so proud of all of them and leaves them to cherish her memory. She is also survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Betty Carter of Glenwood and James and Tammy Carter of Hot Springs; several nieces, nephews and many friends from across the United States. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM, Monday, April 1, 2019, in the Hicks Cemetery with Bro. Travis Lane officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood. Guest registry is at www.davis-smith.com.
