Marie York

Marie York, age 91, of Langley, passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2018. She was born on October 2, 1926, at Langley, the daughter of J.H.P. "Pate" Marsh and Ann Lowery Marsh. On April 18, 1947, she was married to Hersel York, who preceded her in death on November 10, 2007. She was also preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Horace Bailey and Lucion Dobbs; one great-grandson, James Curtis Morphew; her parents; two brothers; and one sister. Marie was a graduate of Henderson State Teachers College and a teacher in the Langley School District for many years before retiring from the Kirby School District in 1981 with 30 years of service. She loved teaching but took early retirement to be the caregiver for her husband, Hersel, for the next 26 years. Marie was an active member and prayer warrior at Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Langley and in the past a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher. She took an active role in the building of the new church and loved her church family, to whom she was known as "Miss Marie". She was devoted to her family, enjoyed life to the fullest, was kind to everyone, and has positively touched countless lives. She was also an avid sports fan! She is survived by four children and their spouses, Ramona Bailey of Glenwood, Frances Dobbs of Mount Ida, Roger and Jeannie York of Langley, and Phyllis and Alan Bear of Lonsdale; three granddaughters and their spouses, Jennifer and John Morphew, Kristen and Luke Benjamin; and Cammie York; five great-grandchildren, Robbie Morphew, McKenzie Morphew, Lydia Benjamin, Caleb Benjamin, and Kate Marie Benjamin; three sisters-in-law, Ruby Corwin, Jewel Balser and Faye Mullen. Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, February 8, 2018, in the Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Langley with Bro. Scott Feemster and Bro. Keith Shewbart officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday, 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Langley Hall Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood. Pallbearers will be Jesse Donald Lowery, Denver McRae, Bob Morphew, John Bright, Marty Arivett and Jim White. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, Langley.
