Maxine McLane Demby

March 29, 1921 — August 2, 2011

Maxine McLane Demby, age 90, of Mount Ida, died on Tuesday, August 2, 2011. She was born on March 29, 1921 in Washita, Arkansas, the daughter of the late Gordon Clyde and Allie (Danley) McLane. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Josiah Howard Demby, III; her infant daughter; two sisters, Margarette McLane and Paula McLane; and her brother, Clyde Jr. McLane. She was employed for the Montgomery County Welfare Department in the 1940's and also worked at the State Capitol in Little Rock during Govern Laney's administration. She moved back to Mount Ida in 1946. Maxine and her husband, Joe, owned and operated the Mount Ida Laundry and Cleaners until the late 1960's. They moved to their farm off of Fairgrounds Road on Williams Creek where they raised cattle, horses and chickens until their retirement. Maxine was the oldest living member of the First Baptist Church in Mount Ida. She was a gifted and talented musician who played the piano and organ at her church from age 14. She was in great demand as an organist in the community for weddings and funerals until her health failed. She never accepted any money from the church, feeling it was her gift to God. She is survived by three sons, Richard (Ruth) Demby of Gainesville, Georgia, James Demby of Mount Ida and Josiah (Phyllis) Demby, IV of Prince George, Virginia; her brother, Bob (Sue) McLane of Mount Ida; four grandchildren, Josiah Demby, V, Mary Demby Jolly, James Walker Demby and Laura Demby; three great-grandchildren; and her beloved pet and companion, "Qweenie". Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, August 5, 2011, in the Davis-Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Glenwood with Rev. Ruth Walker Demby and Rev. John Guerra officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM and Friday 8:30 AM until 9:30 AM, at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Mount Ida Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Cecil Stroope, John Selph, Bob Barrett, Richard Childress, Jon Standridge, Sam Amerson, Monte Millholen and Nathan McLane. Also, her caregivers who provided love and care over the past two years, Wanell Hill, Alice Carmack and Carolyn Farris; and her special "Lady Friends", Carol Joswick, Charlotte Pierce and Carolyn Meeks. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in honor of Maxine's love for animals to the Warm Hearts Humane Society of Montgomery County or the First Baptist Church of Mount Ida Building Fund. Guest registry is at www.davis-smith.com.
