Melba Jean Reed

Melba Jean (McCormick) Reed, of Story, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2019 at the age of 86 years and 10 months. She was born August 18, 1932, to Annie Elisabeth Morgan and James Noble McCormick in the Yell County community of Chula. Prior to losing her mother at the age of 8, Melba was moved into the home of her uncle and aunt, Cecil and Addie McCormick, of Aly. Noble moved there upon Annies death and the 3 of them raised Melba as their only child. A year after high school graduation, Melba married John Harrison Reed on December 31, 1950. He preceded her in death on August 21, 2018, after 67 years of marriage. Melba was a devout member of Refuge Baptist Church and regularly attended Muddy Creek Church of God with John. She was a self-proclaimed journalist writing weekly articles for the Yell County Record and the Montgomery County News. She was an avid gardener and loved cooking. Melba is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Glenda and Bernard Rusert of Pearcy, and Karen and Alan Rettmann of Bentonville; four grandchildren and their spouses, Kristy Middleton and Thomas Crane of Pearcy, Darren and Jenny Suitor of Midlothian, Texas, Dustin and Ali Suitor of Bryant, and Lindsay and Justin Bounds of Fayetteville; nine great-grandchildren, a special friend Roger Holcomb whom she loved like a son, her Reed nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at Refuge Baptist Church with Bro. Tommy Jones and Bro. Bernard Rusert officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday, 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM, at the church. Interment will be in Reed Cemetery under the direction of Davis Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood. Pallbearers will be Garry McCormick, Judge David McCormick, Dr. Dee McCormick, W.A. McCormick, Andrew McCormick, and Roger Holcomb. Honorary pallbearers are all members of Refuge Baptist Church. Donations may be made to the Reed Cemetery Fund in lieu of flowers in care of Johnny Smith, 125 Smith Creek Lane, Story, AR 71970. Guest registry is at www.davis-smith.com.
