He was born on March 3, 1954, the son of William Ray Smith and Virginia Brown Bruce Smith. On October 26, 1987 he married Mary Phillips. He was preceded in death by his parents; four siblings, Ronnie Bruce, Wayne Bruce, Dixie Bruce Vincent and Bill “Dubya” Smith.

Bruce was a Christian and of the Baptist faith. He was a carpenter and a musician. Bruce proudly served six years in the Army National Guard.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Mary Smith; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Joey Smith, Donny and Suzanne Kindt, Nick Kindt; five grandchildren who called him “Pa” - Liam Smith, Cooper Kindt, Neelie Kindt, Porter Kindt, and Nicholai Kindt; one brother and spouse, Lynn and Brian Minyard Smith; two sisters and their spouses, Nanella and Don Talley and Jennifer and Harold Stevens; numerous nieces, nephews, a host of wonderful friends and his extended Portland Hunting Club family.

Bruce was a life-long member of Portland Hunting Club, a decade-long lead guitarist at Music Mountain Jamboree and was the greatest guitar picker in LA (Lower Arkansas). He was an avid chess player who passed along the love of the game to his grandsons.

He was loved by everyone, never met a stranger, and called everyone "Cuz" which was usually followed by one of his favorite lines:

There'll be a little somethin’ extra in your check.
That's handier than a pocket on a shirt.
I spent a week there one night.
Happy Birthday! What'd you get me?
There's two types of liars - those that say they never did and those that say they quit.
If you need me, I'll call you.
