Dan McCarter

Dan McCarter, age 85, of Norman, passed away on Monday, March 16, 2020. He was born on March 8, 1935 in Muskogee, Oklahoma, the son of James Walter McCarter and Ida Elizabeth Garrison McCarter. On July 2, 1955, he was married to Ruby Hughes McCarter who preceded him in death on September 3, 2019. He was also preceded in death by his son, Andy McCarter. He was a member of the Norman First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for over 50 years. He was very active in his church serving as church treasurer, Sunday school teacher, working with the youth and especially supporting missions. When he retired in 1992, he had been the Montgomery County Extension agent for over 30 years. Active in the community, he was a former president and member of the Farm Bureau Board, Sampley Foundation Scholarship Board, Garland County Farmers Association Board of Directors and the Mount Gilead Cemetery Board. He also served as a Montgomery County Justice of the Peace for over 25 years. In his personal life, he loved farming, raising cattle, gardening (he always had that "Green Thumb") and woodworking. He was also known to do a little fishing. Dan faithfully served his God, his family, and his community throughout the years and undoubtedly countless lives have been positively impacted by him. In his retirement years, he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Each one will forever have wonderful and cherished memories of their special time spent with their "Papa". He is survived by three children and their spouses, Mike and Laurie McCarter of Murfreesboro, David and Tammy McCarter of Norman and Kathleen Jackson of Greenwood; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Walter and Brittany McCarter, Wade and Sara McCarter, Budger and Teresa McCarter, Mandy and Phillip Manwering, Andy Jackson, Matthew Jackson and Rusty Jackson; three great-grandsons, Weston McCarter, Colten McCarter and Kamron McCarter; his brother, Tommy McCarter of Oktaha, Oklahoma; and several nieces and nephews. After a private family time along with their pastor, Bro. Robbie Loudermilk, in the Davis-Smith Funeral Home Chapel, Glenwood, burial will be held in Mount Gilead Cemetery. A public Celebration of Life for Mr. McCarter will be held at a later date and will be announced by Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood.
