David "Pappy" Drye

July 12, 1958 — January 22, 2022

David “Pappy” Drye, age 63, walked into the gates of Heaven, Saturday, January 22, 2022.

He was born on July 12, 1958, in Artesia, California. His life was one full of adventure and excitement, starting with a career in the U.S Army. After leaving the Army, he dabbled in all professions, truly being a jack-of-all trades. Some of these included mechanic, carpenter, truck driver, painter, and landscaper. His final profession was being the best Pappy to his grandbabies.

David met the love of his life and best friend, Barbara, June 25, 1980, and after 38 years together, made her an honest woman on February 5, 2018. Together, they built a life full of love and laughter and made a home in Amity where he resided for 33 years.

David is survived by his wife of 42 years, Barbara Drye; four children and their spouses, Laura and Josh Kizer of Alpine, David and Jessica Drye of Amity, Jessica and Steven Duggan of Pearcy, and Glenda and Michael Cook of Arlington, Texas; a niece he loved like a daughter, Amy Knight of Kingwood, Texas; ten grandchildren, Adrianna Qualls, Andrew Peneyra, Jayden McCormick-Drye, Elliot Peneyra, Braxton Drye, Madison Cook, Jagger Kizer, Matthew Drye, Avery Cook, Kiah Duggan, and Jensen Ford; one great-grandchild, Isaac Qualls; four siblings, James, Roy, and Joe Drye, and Tina Launius; his mother, Bulah Rebecca Drye; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and adopted grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Drye, and his favorite uncles, Bud and Bill McGinnis.

David will be remembered for his contagious smile and laugh, his repetitive but always entertaining stories, his willingness to help anyone, and being everyone’s Pappy.

A Celebration of David’s life will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, January 28, 2022, in the Amity First Baptist Church with Bro. John McAnally and Bro. Carl Newman officiating.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening, 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, in the Smith Family Funeral Home Chapel, Glenwood (formerly the Davis-Smith Funeral Home Chapel, Glenwood).

Pallbearers will be Josh Kizer, Michael Cook, Steven Duggan, Hunter McGough, Dusty Skates, and David Sweeney.

Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Krufka and Kevin Wright.
