Gordon A. Smith

Gordon A. Smith, age 75, of Glenwood, died Sunday, March 23, 2014. He was born on May 27, 1938, in Enid, Oklahoma, the son of the late Lloyd Smith and Maxine Williams Smith. Always an adventurous type, he began participating in rodeos and training horses at the age of 12 and attended the University of Texas, Arlington, on a rodeo scholarship. He also started racing motorcycles and sports cars as an early teen, and continued to do so in varying positions, including as a steward for cars for SCCA, and as a safety inspector for motorcycles with AHRMA, until just a few years ago. Mr. Smith served two separate hitches in the U.S. Navy. Perhaps his proudest moment was achieving his black belt in Taekwondo, on March 7, 2013. This came just a week before he was diagnosed with liver cancer, which he fought ferociously for 11 months. He was still planning on achieving further belts, even at the time of his death. While Mr. Smith was not affiliated with a specific church, he was a very spiritual man. Gordon is survived by his wife of thirty-six years, Jimmye B. Smith of Glenwood; his brother, Richard Clint Smith of Houston, Texas; his cousin, Rachel Lale, and her husband, Wallace, of Shawnee, Oklahoma; many nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and a host of friends. Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, March 29, 2014, in the Church of Christ with E. J. Johnson and Rob Blakney officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Glenwood Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood.
