James Wesley Hughes, Jr.

James Wesley Hughes, Jr., age 78, of Angleton, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2013. He was born on January 27, 1935, at Alf, Arkansas, the son of James Wesley Hughes and Gertrude Carter Hughes. On November 22, 1986, he was married to Naomi Collard. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Leonard Cladie Edwards; and his sister, Louise Aleshire. Upon his graduation from Norman High School in May of 1953, he immediately moved to Texas where he began working for Dow Chemical in Freeport, Texas, until retiring after forty-four years. After about four weeks of "honey-do projects", he came out of retirement and went to work for Occidental Chemical Corporation in Houston, Texas for twelve years. A faithful member for twenty-nine years at the Second Baptist Church of Angleton, Texas, he deeply enjoyed working in his church and served for many years as a member and also as chairperson on numerous committees. He was a member of the Lions Club of Angleton, Texas and enjoyed fishing and gardening. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family, whom he dearly loved and cherished. He is survived by his wife, Naomi Hughes of Angleton, Texas; one son, James C. Hughes and his wife, Sheryl, of Angleton, Texas; one daughter, Lorie Novak and her husband, Terry, of Angleton, Texas; one stepson, Brad Tullis and his wife, Melanie, of Navasota, Texas; eight grandchildren, Torie Keith, Kristy Myers, Jeremy Hughes, Julie Williams, Trey Tullis, Daniel Tullis, Xena Bombales and Zofiel Bombales; five great-grandchildren, Gabe Keith, Kaylee Keith, Greyson Myers, Kiley Alexander and Zackary Williams; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Services will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, August 17, 2013, in the Davis-Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Glenwood with Bro. Bryan Hill, Leon Brewer and Ken McDougal officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Interment will be in the Sulphur Springs Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood. Pallbearers will be Gerald Brewer, Joe Brewer, James Simpson, Jack Naron, Ray Miller, Keith Aleshire, Barney Reed and Gary Simpson. Honorary pallbearers will be Zofiel Bombales, Trey Tullis, Daniel Tullis, Zack Williams, Gabe Keith, Greyson Myers and Jeremy Hughes. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Martin Koehn, and the nurses and staff of Arkansas Hospice, 5th Floor, Mercy Hospital in Hot Springs, for their kind and loving care.
