Larry Calhoun

April 1, 1950 — August 2, 2011

Larry Calhoun, age 61, of Amity, passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 after a brief illness. He was born on April 1, 1950, in Prescott, Arkansas, to the late Denzil and Effie Calhoun. He graduated from Prescott High School and went on to graduate from Southern State College in Magnolia with his Master's in Education. He began his teaching career in South Arkansas, teaching at Mount Holly and Laneburg Schools. He left his teaching career to take a job with Potlatch in Prescott, where he spent 12 years as a forestry technician. But, as fate would have it, he returned to teaching in 1989 at Glenwood High School. He spent only one year there, but always loved the area and the people of the community. When the opportunity arose to return to Glenwood in 1993, he was excited to return. He always said this area felt like home. Although teaching was his profession, hunting and fishing were his passion. He was most at peace either in his deer stand or on the lake. And, as much as he loved to hunt and fish, he loved his family more. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. To say he was a family man would be an understatement. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Sharlett Craig; and his brother-in-law, Ernie Edington. He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Lisa Calhoun of Amity; his children, Angela (Rick) Freer of Prescott, David (Mary) Calhoun of Texarkana, Arkansas and Sallie Bowman of Amity; his grandchildren, Andrew, Wesley, Brycelynn, Alexander and Sarah. He is also survived by his two sisters, Margaret Magee of Bonham, Texas and Brenda (Todd) Prewitt of Prescott; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ernest and Virginia Edington of Benton; three brothers-in-law, Randy (Loretta) Edington of Little Rock, Rob (Diane) Edington of Mount Ida and Brent (Catherine) Edington of Portland, Oregon; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Services will be held at 3:00 PM, Saturday, August 6, 2011, in the Glenwood First Church of the Nazarene with Bro. Donis Smead officiating. Visitation will be Friday, 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood. Honorary pallbearers will be all of his former students. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association - Arkansas, 909 W. 2nd Street, Little Rock, Arkansas, 72203.
