Mable Smith

June 11, 1941 — January 18, 2021

Mable Smith, age 79, of Glenwood, passed away on Monday, January 18, 2021.

She was born on June 11, 1941, in Newton County, Mississippi, the daughter of Warren Newton Wilkerson and Velma Griffin Wilkerson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Perry Guy Smith on August 5, 2003. She was also preceded in death by her two sons, Christopher Howerton and Dennis Howerton; her parents; and two sisters, Mary Finley and Florence Budell.

Mable worked as a waitress for over twenty years at the Fish Net, the Caddo Café and many other local restaurants, where she graciously served many people and will be fondly remembered by her customers and family as a very kind-hearted and hard worker. As many will recall, Mable could balance more plates on her one arm than most folks could hold in both hands, all while never dropping or spilling anything.

Above all, Mable dearly loved her family and felt it was an honor and pleasure to be their caregiver anytime she was needed. She especially cherished and adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons, Richard Howerton of Glenwood and Perry Lynn Smith of New Caney, Texas; her daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Harold Pate of Amity; six grandchildren and their spouses, Sabrina and Mike Morse, Billy and Nikki Pate, George Pate, Noah Howerton, Joshua and Elana Howerton and Wayne and Tita Howerton; ten great-grandchildren, Felicity, Dakota, Alyssa, Dylan, Colton, Eli, Lanna, Selah, Colette and Ronin; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Tom and Jimmiecarol Wilkerson of Tomball, Texas and Raymond Wilkerson of Sebastopol, Mississippi; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Bonnie and Paul Hunter of Houston, Texas, Jenell and Melvin Gardner of Cut and Shoot, Texas and Alene Loper of Sebastopol, Mississippi; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and a host of wonderful friends.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, January 22, 2021, in the Salem Cemetery with Bro. Jack Herring officiating.

Pallbearers will be Mike Morse, George Pate, Billy Pate, Dakota Pate, Jarred Daniels, Richard Howerton and Felicity Pate.
