Allen Cline Howard

Allen "Al Howard The One Man Band" Cline Howard, age 89, of Grand Prairie, Texas, formerly of Norman, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, October 16, 2014. He was born on October 24, 1924, in Norman, the son of Oliver Rufus Howard and Rose Klein Howard. On April 23, 1948 he was married to the love of his life, Mary Martha Warford, who preceded him in death on December 12, 2005. He was also preceded in death by his parents; his beloved daughters, Brenda Howard and Alta Sue Howard; his infant grandson, Gary Allen French; three brothers, Perry Howard, Melvin Howard and Junior Howard; and three sisters, Jewell Graves, Mary Graves and Vernell Arnold. He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served our country with pride as a Navy Seaman on the USS Detroit in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese signed their surrender that ended the war on September 2, 1945. After the war he returned to his beloved Smoky Holler in Norman, where he met, Mary, his wife of 57 years. In 1958, the family moved to Grand Prairie, Texas, where he worked for Texas Industries (TXI) as a night steam watchman until he retired in the mid 1980's. Al had an extraordinary music career that extended for many years until early 2014, when he became ill. He was one of the most desired amateur musicians in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area and was loved and respected by many. His love for music and the desire to make someone smile will long be remembered. Pop, as he was known by many, was the true meaning of an honorable and dedicated family man who dearly loved and cherished his family and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Neva Howard of Euless, Texas; his daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Randy Nonnemacher of Grand Prairie, Texas; five grandchildren and their spouses, Naomi Ferrell, Keith Thomas and his wife, Tricia, Jeremy Thomas and his wife, Erica, Macky Howard and his wife, Tessa, and Jesse Howard and his wife, Lisa; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, James "Jim" Howard of Louisiana; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of wonderful friends. Services will be held at 3:00 PM, Saturday, October 25, 2014, in the Davis-Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Glenwood with Bro. Don Warford officiating. Visitation will be held Friday evening, 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Interment with military honors will be in the Black Springs Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood. Pallbearers will be Keith Thomas, Jeremy Thomas, Macky Howard, Jesse Howard, Cody Howard and Adrian Thomas. Guest registry is at www.davis-smith.com.
